UP WE GOSuccess Happens One Step at a Time

Driving upfront in my grandfather’s oversized Lincoln, I remember the feel of the plush purple seats, the warm breeze coming through the windows and most of all, the music from the radio that he always had on. It was before we wore seatbelts and as kids could sit two or three across. Winding along a road to pick blueberries, I remember him talking about how important it was to listen to the words of the songs on the radio. Like really listen. So I do.

But on a particular day recently I wasn’t feeling like I was driving on some meandering green path. I was feeling panic.  Like a tornado had gripped my stomach and moved all the way up to my mind where it was swirling thoughts, deadlines, meetings, more meetings, continually changing schedules of kids activities and how in the world I was going to piece this all together.  How am I supposed to achieve all my goals when time feels like it’s on fast forward?

I was in this mindset when I clicked on the radio and tuned into am amazing song from a band called LIGHTS. I had attended their concert here in Halifax, NS,  with my sister and niece. I hadn’t heard of the band before that. But now I listened to the words more closely. Here are a couple of the verses:

From “Up We Go”, LIGHTS
Nothing gives easy
Easy gives nothing
I’m just tryin’a keep
Income coming in
Dawn is bound to break
When the night is done
Always darker days before brighter ones

Everyone here is ready to go
It’s been a hard year with nothing to show
From down this road
It’s only on we go, on we go
Everyone here is ready to go
It’s been a hard year, and I only know
From down this low
It’s only up we go, up we go

Do any of those words resonate with you? This girl is in her twenties, a young mom. She’s following her dream to be an artist. I love this song and her resilient attitude.

Sometimes things feel stalled. We get disappointedfrustrated that our success might not be happening quick enough. It’s like we all have some sort of milestone meter that we assume the world is measuring us against. My experience is that you’re likely hitting more successes then you think.
We are all on our own path. It’s important to create big goals and expectations, but remember that success is a process. Success doesn’t happen in a single giant leap. Instead, success is achieved by a series of small, intentional steps. We just have to stay on path.

Up We Go.

Wishing You Much Success,
